2013 Oscar Prediction

2012 was a prediction year for me. I had many blog posts for predicting Golden Globe for 2012 & 2013, Oscar 2012, all the major games of Euro 2012, and not forgetting major smartphone releases in 2012, of which most of them went absolutely perfect. And now here is how I see the 85th Academy awards.

American President's struggle for the amendment in constitution to abolish Slavery, Lincoln leads Oscar 2013 with 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. Life of Pi follows Lincoln with 11 nominations including Best picture and Best director, which it seems not to be winning. Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook earned eight each whereas the favorites Zero Dark Thirty and Django Unchained got five nominations each and that's without Best directing for Kathryn Bigelow and Quentin Tarantino. Other major snubs include no nominations for TDKR, no place for Leonardo Dicaprio in Supporting actor nominations for Django Unchained and Ben Affleck for Directing Argo.
Though I doubt if the Best picture either goes to either Lincoln or Argo, and Best actress goes to either Jessica Chastain (for Zero Dark Thirty) or Jennifer Lawrence (for Silver Linings Playbook), here are my prediction for this years Oscar.

NEA to make 14 hours load-shedding per day.

Nepal Electricity Authority has announced that the latest load-shedding to be 14 hours a day. This fresh power cut comes after India halted the 25 MW electricity supply to Nepal. Earlier Nepalese were living in 12 hours loadshedding per day. The new load-shedding is known to be effective from January 19, 2013 Saturday (Magh 6, 2069).
According to the new schedule, the 14 hours power cut  is done in two shifts in combination of 7+7 and 8+6 hours. With this huge city supply cut, I have to save some battery power for continuous surfing.

Here is the new load-shedding schedule, please click the picture to download the schedule in jpg.

Soongava- dance of the Orchids movie review.

I always feel excited to watch a Nepali movie in a full packed hall and that's what happened on the first day show for the movie that I am going to write something on. Another thing, I was also eager to watch the movie for the daring content of social stigma for the homosexuality in Nepal where two homosexual girls/boys living together for life are taken as a taboo.
'Soongava-dance of the orchids' is based on the social demarcation that people dare to go beyond though their utmost desire is to live a life they want, cross any social barriers coming the way.

The movie shows how two girls Kiran Sharma (Nisha Adhikari) and Dia Bajracharya- (Dia Maskey) develop love through their friendship and decides to live together when Diya's family are preparing to marry her to a guy. Despite their families denial and society's glare for their lesbian relationship, they choose their destiny living together and the consequences follow that I won't be revealing here.
Directed by Subarna Thapa, Soongava was selected in many international film festivals and also screened in our own Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF 2012).
Outstanding performance from Diya Maskey and Saugat Malla make people spellbound to their characters and close shots emotions feels real in the movie. Nisha Adhikari's masculine homo sex is quite shadowed by Deeya and Saugats amazing performance. Another thing worth mentioning is the uniform color contrast that I forgot to mention for 'Dhanda' being quite non uniform. Music by Sylvain Morizet is quite soothing and mixes well with the movie flow. But the sluggish flow and unnecessary English dialogues is annoying sometimes.
Though the movie goes well for the portrayal of love, insecurity, family barriers and fight, there are some scenes that is overdone for an international movie (production collaborated with a french cine company) , a scene with senior artist like Basundhara Bhusal speaking English poorly with upside-down iPhone seems not real.

"Timro Tyo Nazarle" by Ciney Gurung- an original soundtrack from the movie Soongava.

The awkward moment for straight people is to watch two girls or two boys kissing/cuddling in a big screen with people next to their sides. Such cuddling scene if not done properly risks your whole movie but for this movie its done nicely without making it vulgar, that prompted people to laugh other than knowing how to respond.
Lastly I am not that intelligent to find a link between the English title "dance of the orchids" and some dance performances by Diya Maskey in the movie. Poor me!!!

First trailer of Badhshala -a new nepali movie released.

Badhshala, which had released its first poster on the World Human Rights day and garnered almost 6 lakhs views, has now its first official theatrical trailer on Youtube. Directed by Manoj Pandit, the man acclaimed for Dasdhunga (a movie based on the mystery behind UML leader Madan Bhandari and Jibraj Ashrit killing with an accident), Badshala is based on the atrocities and human rights violation during the emergency period  due to maoist insurgency. Badshala has very brilliant actors in its cast and most of them being theatre artists. Anup Baral, Saugat Malla, Dayahang Rai, Arpan Thapa, Khagendra lamichane, Sarita Giri, Samuna KC are those known so far.

The movie is known to be portraying the real life brutalities/atrocities in the army barracks like Bhairab Nath Gand which was feared by many as a torture jail. Produced by Mohan Dotel- Smashing apple tv, the movie also shows the relationship between the army and the jailbirds- who were accused of being Maoist activists or providing assistance to the rebels.

Here is the first theatrical trailer of the movie Badhsala.

I have a single word for this trailer- Stunning -> absolutely stunning. This is how our Nepali cinema takes a drastic turn, with a movie based on our very own story.

The highly anticipated movie is set to release on March 08 2013 (Falgun 25, 2069).
